Regional Transit's (RT) Mobility Advisory Council was
formed in 2005 as a voluntary advisory body to replace its previous,
longstanding Disabled and Elderly Committee for Accessible
Transportation (DECAT). A goal of the Council is to encourage
involvement from key members of agencies and organizations,
as well as members of the general public, who are transit users
and/or recognized for their advocacy and community service on behalf
of the senior and disabled community.
The Council is
comprised of
up to 21 members, 15 representing organizations or agencies which
provide services or advocate for persons with disabilities and older
adults and 6 at-large members representing individuals with
disabilities and older adults. The composition of representatives
reflects a balance across various types of disabilities.
The object and
purpose of the Mobility Advisory Council is to advise RT on system
accessibility features and improvements, provide communication
between RT and key stakeholder groups whose interests are
representing persons with disabilities and older adults, and
represent public transportation interest areas for persons with
disabilities and older adults. The Council's annual work plan links
accessibility issues with larger customer-oriented decisions, such
as fare changes, customer information, and service plans.
RT’s Board of Directors and staff greatly value the
ability to consult with the Council on service issues affecting the
disabled and elderly community. The Council provides RT with the
consumer’s perspective on many of RT’s system improvements, such as:
-
RT
facilities (including stop and station design/access)
-
RT
vehicle design
-
Updates of transit, paratransit and metropolitan transportation
plans
-
Fixed-route and paratransit service provision, including
training,
communication and policy matters
-
Organizational initiatives and transit ballot measures.
The Mobility Advisory Council meets monthly, with
standing committees that meet every other month. All meetings are
open to the public. Input is always accepted concerning accessible
transit issues not on the meeting agenda. As well as helping RT
maintain a fully accessible public transit system in the greater
Sacramento area, it is an objective of MAC to educate the members of
our community to their rights under the ADA for equal access to
public transportation.
