Improvements at the 13th &
16th Street Light Rail Stations
Link to CADA Workshop
information page
RT, in partnership with the Capitol Area
Development Authority
(CADA) and the City of Sacramento, has completed improvements at the
13th & 16th Street light rail stations! This project was to renovate
and improve connectivity to the 13th Street and 16th Street light
rail stations, which are within the R Street Corridor redevelopment
area. The project was implemented by RT (for the work within the
light rail stations) and the City of Sacramento (for access
improvements, lighting and signage on sidewalks leading to the
stations). RT wishes to recognize the efforts
Callander Associates Landscape Architecture Inc.,
Zeiger
Engineers, Inc.
(Electrical),
C&C Construction, Inc.
(general contractor), and
Weckworth Construction
(steel and electrical contractor). RT's portion of the project cost
was $1,080,350.
In 2003, the Friends of Light and Transit hosted a public workshop
to address the lack of amenities and poor condition of the 16th
Street light rail station. The workshop resulted in a joint project
between CADA, the City of Sacramento, and Regional Transit to
improve the 13th and 16th Street Light Rail Stations. In 2004, this
partnership applied for and received a grant from the Sacramento
Area Council of Governments (SACOG) Community Design Program in the
amount of $1.6 Million. The grant is administered by the California
Transportation Commission (CTC) and the California Department of
Transportation (Caltrans). Of the $190,000 required local match,
$90,000 came from CADA tax increment revenues, and $100,000 was
contributed by RT from Measure A funds. RT also received $79,823 of
Federal Section 5307 Transportation Enhancement funds and 34,125 of
State Transit Assistance for the project.
The station improvements will benefit area transit uses and
pedestrians who live and work in the area. Additionally, the
improvements will help drive the community development efforts of
the CADA and the redevelopment goals of the R Street Corridor. The
project would not have been possible without the combined efforts of
CADA, the City of Sacramento, and RT in addition to the funding from
SACOG. CADA and RT will continue to work together to identify
funding for additional improvements that were designed for the
project but were not funded.
