Addressing the Sacramento Region’s Homelessness Crisis through Transitional Housing

The homeless epidemic is continuing to grow in the Sacramento Region. Sacramento County’s 2022 homeless count found nearly 9,300 individuals experiencing homelessness on any given night, a 67% increase from the 2019 count. Other county counts were 744 persons (21% increase) for Placer and 746 persons (14% increase) for Yolo. These increases in homelessness reflect the continued challenges with housing affordability locally, across the state, and around the country.What can we, as real estate land use professionals in both the private and public sector, do to be part of solving this crisis? In the spirit of ULI, we’re bringing to Sacramento a conversation around best practices and solutions from other parts of the state as well as examples of successful local programs that are succeeding in providing housing to the homeless. We’ll also look at efforts to improve the delivery of transitional housing across the Sacramento region. We intend for this Transitional Housing event to inspire our local leaders to leverage best practices, innovation, expertise, and resources in the private sector to work as quickly and as efficiently as possible to create needed transitional housing with supportive services.
Following remarks by our keynote speaker, our local panel will discuss innovative private-sector solutions and non-traditional practices that are making progress with transitional housing strategies having a measurable impact on this crisis in their communities.
