MEDIA STATEMENT: University/65th Street Station Incident

March 22, 2024 SacRT News

The Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) is deeply saddened about the unfortunate incident that took place on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at the University/65th Street Station involving a shooting on a light rail train. Our condolences go out to the victims and their families during this difficult time.

SacRT is working with the Sacramento Police Department (Sac PD) and has provided surveillance video from the train and the station to assist in their investigation.

In response to the incident, for the safety of our passengers and employees, the University/65th Street station was immediately closed, and light rail services were temporarily suspended to facilitate the police investigation. We implemented a bus bridge (shuttle bus between stations) between 29th Street and Sunrise stations, and temporarily relocated bus stops serving the University/65th Street Station to the Power Inn Station until the situation was resolved. SacRT deployed a security guard and operations supervisors to the scene to assist riders during the closure.

By the start of service on Friday, March 22, 2024, the University/65th Street Station was reopened, and light rail services resumed normal operations.

The safety and well-being of our passengers, employees, and the community at large are of paramount importance to us. We remain committed to working closely with law enforcement to ensure the continued safety and security of our transit system. Safety is a top priority for SacRT as we have contract services with both the Sacramento Police Department and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, we have Transit Ambassadors on trains and Security Guards at stations. We also have more than 1,500 live feed cameras across the transit system that are monitored 24/7 in a Security Operations Center that is located in Sac PD headquarters.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the victims and their loved ones, and we stand in solidarity with our community as we navigate through this difficult time together.
