First SacRT Front-Line Employee Tests Positive for COVID-19

July 13, 2020 SacRT News

**July 14 Update** Yesterday, July 13, SacRT announced the first front-line employee testing positive for COVID-19. The bus routes that were reportedly driven by this operator were incorrect. The operator drove Route 1 (between 1 p.m. and 5:05 p.m.) and Route 38 (between 6:21 a.m. and 9:55 a.m.) from July 1 through July 7. As a reminder, the bus operator did wear a mask and was temperature checked prior to the start of their shift. This is the first known case of a SacRT front-line employee contracting COVID-19 since the Shelter-in-Place order was mandated on March 19.  SacRT apologizes for any inconvenience that this error may have caused.

The Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) was notified on July 12, 2020, that a SacRT bus operator tested positive for COVID-19. Out of an abundance of caution, SacRT is advising riders of the bus routes and trips from July 1, 2020 through July 7, 2020 (see chart below for details) that the bus operator worked before feeling ill and self-isolating until getting tested on July 8, 2020.

The bus operator did wear a mask while on duty and was temperature checked prior to the start of each work shift, as all SacRT employees are. This is the first known case of a SacRT front-line employee contracting COVID-19 since the Shelter-in-Place order was mandated on March 19, 2020, almost four months ago. Per SacRT policy, any employee diagnosed with COVID-19 is directed to stay home and self-isolate in compliance with public health recommendations, and provide a release to work notice from a healthcare provider before returning.

SacRT has already taken a number of meticulous steps to lower the risk of employees and customers contracting COVID-19, which we believe is the reason that we have not had any front-line employees contract the virus until now. Some of SacRT’s safety practices include:

  • Fogging and disinfecting buses, light rail trains and facilities
  • Cleaning and sanitizing all touch points
  • Blocking off seats in buses and light rail trains to provide physical distancing
  • Installing protective plexi-glass barriers on each bus by the driver’s seat to reduce exposure when boarding
  • Requiring all employees and riders to wear a face covering or mask
  • Providing employees with personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, disposable gloves, masks and safety glasses
  • Distributing masks to those riders who do not have them
  • Reminding riders to maintain social distancing at stations/stops and onboard vehicles
  • Urging riders to download ZipPass the free mobile fare app to reduce touchpoints
  • Increasing or restoring service levels to minimize the risk of crowding
  • Temperature check all employees and contractors as they enter the workplace

During this unprecedented time, please know that SacRT is committed to keeping employees, customers and community members safe and healthy while providing essential bus and light rail service for the Sacramento region. Below is a list of the bus routes indicating the start time of each trip the bus operator worked: (See update above for corrected routes)
