Safety First with SacRT

Download the
Alert SacRT App
The AlertSacRT app is an essential tool for Sacramento transit users, offering real-time rider alerts and a discreet, effective way to report safety and security concerns directly to Regional Transit Police Services (RTPS). Users can send anonymous messages, including text, photos, or six-second videos, to report suspicious activities.
This initiative complements the existing surveillance and communication systems across all light rail stations, closely monitored by a dedicated security team.
Despite constant patrols, the collective vigilance of passengers, armed with local knowledge and the AlertSacRT app, is crucial in identifying and reporting any unusual occurrences.
By downloading AlertSacRT, passengers not only stay updated on service disruptions but also play a pivotal role in maintaining the safety and security of the transit system.

SacRT has taken an active and innovative approach to help address the unhoused crisis impacting the community and our system. We have created an in-house Social Service Practitioner position and program to connect individuals living along SacRT’s right-of-way and transit facilities with regional services.
Working in partnership with local and regional mental health stakeholders and agencies, our team is responsible for ensuring that the rights of potentially underserved mental health consumers are upheld; ensuring they are appropriately served when they enter the SacRT system and are in contact with law enforcement or may potentially encounter law enforcement and other SacRT personnel.
The Social Equity Program is a partner program with Sacramento Steps Forward which provides access to the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) database.

Stay Vigilant, Report Threats
Sacramento Regional Transit Police Services (SacRTPS) is dedicated to keeping you and your vehicle safe. Our Peace Officers, Transit Officers and Security Guards are assigned to preventive patrols at all SacRT facilities including, light rail stations and trains, bus stops, Park & Ride lots and Service Centers to help reduce the possibility of crime. Recognize behaviors that threaten safety and report them.
Personal Safety
- Know your route. Plan your route ahead of time and leave early so you’re not rushed. Have a backup route just in case there’s a delay with your first plan.
- Stay alert of what’s going on around you. If you need to use your phone, look up from your screen often, and keep one earbud out so you can hear what’s going on around you. If you ever see someone acting in a way that makes you uncomfortable, move away. Sit closer to the bus/train operator or switch to another bus or train car.
- Hold on to your belongings, and be sure you take everything with you as you exit. Keep your phone, devices and any valuables in your bag.
- See something? Say something. Know how to get help if you ever don’t feel safe. If there’s someone or something causing you to not feel safe, let us know and someone will respond right away.
Personal Vehicle Security
- Always lock your vehicle, close all your windows, and set your alarm.
- Use anti-theft devices to secure your steering wheel or catalytic converter.
- Remove all valuable possessions from sight and lock them in your trunk or take them with you.
Safety Around the Bus
- Never run after or next to a moving bus.
- Watch for oncoming traffic in both directions.
- Let riders in wheelchairs or with disabilities board and or exit first.
Safety Around the Train
- Always stand away from the edge of the platform.
- Don’t lean against the train doors, keep hands clear.
- Look both ways when crossing the tracks.
- Never go around a crossing arm in the down position, whether on foot, riding a bike, or driving a car.
