The Green Line to the Airport is a bold and visionary project that would connect downtown Sacramento to North Natomas and the Sacramento International Airport by light rail—offering a clean, reliable, and sustainable alternative to driving along one of the region’s most congested corridors.
The project is a long-standing regional priority and is included in key transportation planning documents, but it remains in the early planning stages. The estimated cost of the full extension is approximately $2 billion, as it would include a new bridge over the American River and elevated structures throughout much of the alignment.
Recognizing the significant capital investment required, SacRT is actively exploring the possibility of building the project in phases. One approach under consideration is to begin with a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service that would generally follow the same route and stop locations evaluated for the future light rail extension. This phased approach would provide early transit benefits to the community, help ease congestion, and support future transit-oriented development in South and North Natomas—while taking advantage of land already set aside for transit use.
While SacRT is committed to delivering improved transit connections to the airport, final design and construction cannot move forward without a sustainable local funding source. Securing such funding is essential for SacRT to remain competitive for state and federal grants and to bring this transformative project to life.
