Free Rides Offered for First Week of New Service

The Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) today, celebrated the relaunch of the Airport Express Bus (route 142) service between downtown Sacramento and the Sacramento International Airport. The service will start on Sunday, August 29, 2021, operated with new electric battery powered zero-emission buses.

SacRT initially launched the Airport Express Bus service in January 2020, but was temporarily suspended in March 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We are so glad to be able to bring back the Airport Express Bus service, especially operating with an all-electric zero-emission bus fleet,” said SacRT General Manager/CEO Henry Li. “The Express Bus is not only a great option for convenient transportation between downtown Sacramento and the Airport, it is also a clean air alternative to driving and parking.”

“Frequent public transit service to the airport is critical to ensure Sacramentans’ mobility throughout our region and beyond,” said Congresswoman Doris Matsui. “SacRT has long been a community pillar for driving economic growth and equity  throughout our region, and I am thrilled that they are relaunching their airport service – this time with electric buses. I applaud SacRT for taking these important steps to open up access to our airport while combatting transportation pollution and keeping our air clean.”

“With traffic congestion continuing along I-5, even during the pandemic, this frequent bus service is a game changer to help people get to and from the airport,” said SacRT Board Chair and Citrus Heights Mayor Steve Miller.

“SACOG applauds the relaunch of SacRT’s Airport Express Bus service. Reliable and accessible multimodal transportation options like this are essential to reducing freeway congestion and building a vibrant, thriving, and connected region,” said Sacramento Area Council of Governments Executive Director James Corless.

“We are thrilled SacRT has restarted the Airport Express bus service to SMF,” said Cindy Nichol, Director of Airports for  Sacramento County. “This is a long desired service for our passengers and a great connector between downtown and the airport.” SacRT’s Route 142 Airport Express offers trips between downtown Sacramento and the Sacramento International Airport every 30 minutes, seven days a week. Express Bus service begins at 4:45 a.m. and operates until 11.29 p.m.

The new Airport Express Bus service offers direct service to Terminals A and B, an economical ride for only $2.50 for a single ride, $1.25 for discounted eligible riders, or free for students/youth in grades Kindergarten through 12th. The Airport Express Bus is very convenient with multiple downtown bus stops and easy access from several light rail stations.

The Airport Bus Service is relaunching with zero-emission battery powered buses, which is part of SacRT’s Zero Emission Vehicle Plan. SacRT is working to transition its entire fleet to all zero-emission vehicles by 2040, which includes that all new bus purchases are required to be zero-emission starting January 2029.

To celebrate the relaunch of the Airport Express service, SacRT is offering free rides on the bus from Sunday, August 29, 2021, through Saturday, September 4, 2021. Reminder, masks are required to ride transit.
