Downtown Riverfront Streetcar Project
SacRT is advancing the Downtown Riverfront Streetcar Project, a transformative 1.8-mile light-rail connection between West Sacramento and downtown Sacramento, improving regional mobility, transit accessibility, and connectivity to key destinations.
This project will service as a catalyst for the nation’s largest infill development sites; the Sacramento Railyards and will link Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento to Sacramento Valley Station, providing seamless access to Amtrak, Capitol Corridor, San Joaquins, and SacRT’s light rail and bus network.
Upcoming Public Planning Workshops
SacRT will host a series of Public Planning Workshops to share updates and gather feedback on the Downtown Riverfront Streetcar project. Community members are invited to attend, provide comments, and learn more about the project’s progress, design concepts, and next steps.

Project Highlights
The Downtown Riverfront Streetcar will serve high-demand destinations, including:

- Downtown Commons (DOCO)

- Old Sacramento Waterfront
- Historic Washington District & Riverwalk Park
- Sutter Health Park
- The Railyards Development
Revised Alignment
The revised alignment will use a single Siemens S700 streetcar vehicle, traveling from Sutter Health Park across the Tower Bridge, along Capitol Mall, and south on 3rd Street to N Street. Double tracks will be installed on N Street, connecting to SacRT’s existing light rail system at 7th and 8th Streets.

Environmental Review & Public Comment Period
As part of the environmental review process, SacRT released the Subsequent Initial Study/Proposed Mitigated Negative Declaration (SIS/PMND) for public review in January 2026.
Public Comment Period ended on February 12, 2026.

Project Timeline & Background
- 2015: Initial project conception
- 2022: SacRT Board & cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento approve N Street Alignment.
- 2025: Revised alignment proposed to improve connectivity and reduce costs.
- 2026: Environmental and design documents completed in winter.
- 2027: Construction expected to begin in early 2027.
- 2029/2030: Project completion.
