A GIS shapefile is a simple, nontopological format for storing the geometric location and attribute information of geographic features. GIS shapefiles consist of three or more files with specific file extensions and models a particular aspect of transit information (routes, stops, stations, etc). The required files that make up a shapefile include:
*shp (feature geometry)
*shx (index of feature geometry)
*dbf (attribute information)
A KML file is a simple file format for storing geographical data, used in Google Earth and many other products.
