Light Rail Modernization: Station Platform Modifications

March 6, 2023 General

Light rail station platforms along the Gold and Blue lines need to be modified to provide access for riders on the new low-floor light rail vehicles. The station platforms are required to be at least eight inches above the top of rail track to allow for the ramp to deploy from the vehicle to the station platform with the proper slope for passengers to board. Most stations (48 of 53) serving the light rail system do not have platforms that meet the eight-inch requirement and will need to be raised.

About the Project:

In the first phase, SacRT will modify all the Gold Line Stations to accommodate a 2-car train. Phase 1 is expected to be completed by summer 2024. Phase 2 will modify all the Gold Line Stations to raise the remaining platform to accommodate a 3-car train. The modifications to the 19 Blue Line Stations will begin in 2024. A total of 48 stations platforms will need to be modified to accommodate the new low floor vehicles.

Riders will be notified about upcoming service disruptions in advance. To stay informed of light rail service disruptions, download the free Alert SacRT app from the App Store or Google Play.
