Safety and Security Performance

A few years ago, safety on the system was a genuine problem. Fare evasion reached as high as 20%. Crime ran at 7.5 incidents per million trips. SacRT didn’t look away from those numbers. We named them and went to work.

The Results are Measurable

The security team works alongside local law enforcement, not separately from it, through active partnerships that extend the reach of both. The camera network is part of a layered system that includes an audio deterrent local media has called the “voice of god,” which helps de-escalate situations before they require a physical response.

New low-floor light rail trains are cleaner, more accessible, and easier to board for riders of all abilities. Platforms are monitored around the clock, with automated systems that help de-escalate situations before they require a security response, keeping the environment safe.

SacRT has earned seven national safety and security awards as a result of these changes. This independent, external recognition proves that the progress is real.

Transit safety extends beyond the platform. Sacramento ranks among the most dangerous cities in the country for pedestrian and cyclist fatalities. Every trip on SacRT is one fewer car on the road contributing to that problem.

Transit also keeps emergency lanes clear. SacRT has invested in signal and communications infrastructure specifically designed to help 911 responders avoid traffic delays. In an emergency, seconds count, and a less congested road can be the difference.
