Next Stop: Safety & Security

How SacRT has improved safety and security for all riders.

A DECADE OF MEASURABLE CHANGE

SacRT invested in personnel, technology, enforcement, monitoring, and partnerships designed to make the system safer.

Graphic: Transit Crime: 2.7 incidents per million trips (down from 7.5) Fare Evasion: below 1% (down from 20%) Security Team: +200 personnel added, doubling the size of the team Cameras: 5,000+ live-feed cameras, running 24/7 to monitor stations and vehicles.

The security team works alongside local law enforcement, not separately from it, through active partnerships that extend the reach of both. The camera network is part of a layered system that includes an audio deterrent local media has called the “voice of god,” which helps de-escalate situations before they require a physical response.

WHAT SAFETY LOOKS LIKE BEHIND THE NUMBERS

The change didn't happen because of one program.

SacRT’s approach includes:

  • People on the System
Transit Ambassadors, security guards, law enforcement partners, and other safety personnel.
  • Eyes on the System
More than 5,000 live-feed cameras provide 24/7 monitoring.
  • Law Enforcement Partnerships
SacRT works with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department and other partners to address incidents and improve response.
  • Accountability
Fare enforcement and other systemwide measures have reduced fare evasion to below 1%.
  • Continuous Improvement
Safety plans, technology, and procedures continue to evolve as conditions change.

SAFETY ISN’T SOMETHING YOU FIX ONCE

Cameras have to operate. Personnel have to be staffed. Technology has to be maintained. Vehicles and stations have to be kept in good condition. Partnerships have to continue.

The improvements SacRT has made required sustained investment. Keeping them going will, too.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE FUTURE

Sacramento residents have identified greater security on light rail and safety at stops and stations among their priorities for transit investment.

SacRT has demonstrated that investment can produce measurable improvements.

The next challenge is protecting that progress while continuing to make the system safer.
