At SacRT, the safety of our riders and employees is our top priority. Behind the wheel, our bus operators are not just drivers—they are parents, neighbors, mentors, and friends. Every day, they ensure thousands of people get to their destinations safely.

SacRT Is Committed to Safety  Each day, bus operators encounter various challenges that test their skills and resilience. Additionally, bus operators must interact with a diverse range of passengers, each with unique needs and expectations. Unfortunately, these unique encounters sometimes results in conflicts over fare payment or other nuisance behavior that can escalate into assaults on our frontline staff. When a bus operator is hurt, it impacts all of us: passengers, other drivers, and our entire community. Assaults on operators don’t just endanger one person—they put everyone on board at risk.

Our Commitment to Protecting Our Team and Riders  We have taken several steps to ensure the safety and security of our bus operators and passengers, including:

  • Installing protective shields on many of our buses to create a safer space for our operators.
  • Enhancing conflict resolution training for our operators to better handle tense situations.
  • Increasing security presence on board and at key locations to deter incidents.
  • Automating fare announcements, so our operators don’t have to enforce fares directly.
  • Providing SacRT’s Security Operations Center with access to live feed cameras on all buses, allowing for real-time monitoring and response to incidents.

We All Play a Role in Safety and Security

SacRT is introducing a new initiative, “Respect the Ride – Respect the Driver,” to raise awareness about the vital role our bus operators play in keeping our region moving—and the importance of treating bus operators with respect to ensure a safe and positive experience for everyone on board.    We ask our riders to treat the people behind the wheel with dignity, just as they treat you. They’re working hard every day to get you where you need to go—let’s keep them safe, together, and respect the ride!
