SacRT Heat-Resilient Bus Shelters Project

Climate Ready Bus Shelters

Building a More Comfortable and Climate-Ready Transit Experience

SacRT is proud to launch the Heat-Resilient Bus Shelters Project, a forward-thinking initiative to improve rider comfort and safety during extreme heat events. Funded by the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research through the Extreme Heat Community Resilience Program (EHCRP), this project will explore innovative shelter designs and install up to 20 new heat-resilient bus shelters across the Sacramento region.

Project Overview

Transit riders often face harsh weather conditions while waiting at bus stops — especially during Sacramento’s increasingly hot summers. This project aims to:

  • Improve rider comfort by reducing heat exposure at bus stops
  • Enhance climate resilience through sustainable shelter design
  • Promote health and equity by prioritizing high-need locations
  • Engage the community in shaping the future of transit infrastructure

The new shelters will be installed at shelter-ready locations identified in SacRT’s Bus Stop Improvement Plan.

Project Timeline

Community & Stakeholder Engagement

We believe the best solutions come from the people who use them. That’s why we’re inviting riders, residents, and community partners to help shape this project.

Upcoming Engagement Opportunities:

  • December 2025: Stakeholder meeting to review design concepts and outreach plans
  • January – March 2026: Community pop-ups and meetings to gather feedback on shelter designs
  • Pre- and Post-Installation Events: Outreach events at select shelter sites

Stay tuned for event announcements and opportunities to get involved!

Why It Matters

This project is part of SacRT’s broader commitment to equity, sustainability, and rider experience. By investing in heat-resilient infrastructure, we’re helping ensure that public transit remains a safe, comfortable, and accessible option — even as climate conditions change.
