SacRT has partnered with the County and City of Sacramento to explore major transportation improvements along Stockton Boulevard.
The Stockton Boulevard STEP (Safety and Transit Enhancement Project) aims to create a safer, more accessible corridor for everyone—whether walking, biking, riding transit, or driving.
What is the Stockton Boulevard STEP?
The project combines two major efforts:
- Corridor Redesign – Improvements between Florin Road and Alhambra Boulevard, including traffic safety upgrades, better pedestrian and bicycle facilities, and enhanced landscaping and lighting.
- Transit Enhancements – Upgrades to SacRT Route 51 along Stockton Boulevard, Broadway, and downtown streets (7th, 8th, and 9th). Planning will also evaluate the potential for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), which could bring faster service with features like dedicated bus lanes and transit signal priority.
Proposed Enhancements May Include:
- Upgrading Bus Route 51 to BRT standards
- New BRT-style stations with larger shelters, seating, real-time arrival info, and improved signage
- Safer pedestrian crossings and ADA-compliant curb ramps
- Improved bicycle infrastructure and wayfinding
- Traffic calming and safety improvements
- Upgraded lighting and landscaping
- Ongoing community engagement
Community Engagement
Public input is central to shaping the project. The City of Sacramento and partners are leading a robust engagement process, which includes:
- Advisory Committee meetings with community leaders, businesses, and organizations
- Pop-up workshops at local events and gathering spaces
- Focus groups and interviews with transit operators and community partners
- Online and in-person community workshops to share designs and gather feedback
- Surveys and interactive online tools to capture community input
Project Schedule
Engagement will continue across three major milestones:
- Milestone 1: Develop Design Alternatives – Initial concepts shared for feedback.
- Milestone 2: Evaluate Alternatives – Community input helps refine and compare options.
- Milestone 3: Establish Preferred Design – A Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) is identified and pilot projects scoped.
Each phase will include coordinated outreach through email newsletters, social media, posters, and partner communications.
