Watt/I-80 Transit Center Construction Update: Phase Change Begins Wednesday, December 3

SACRAMENTO, CA – The Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) is announcing the next major phase of the Watt/I-80 Transit Center Improvement Project, with important changes beginning in December 2025. 

Phase Change Begins Wednesday, December 3, 2025 
On Wednesday, December 3, construction will shift to the northbound (east side) of Watt Avenue. This marks the start of the next phase of the project, which includes demolition and reconstruction of the east side bus plaza, stairway, and pedestrian connection under Watt Avenue. 
 
During this phase, the northbound bus stop (upper level) will close. Riders should use the temporary bus stop near the Wendy’s at Watt Avenue and Longview Drive. Pedestrian detour signage will guide riders to cross safely at Longview Drive. The east side elevator and stairs will remain open through Sunday, December 14, 2025.  

Southbound Side Reopens Monday, December 15, 2025 
On Monday, December 15, the southbound (west side) of Watt Avenue will reopen to the public, marking the completion of the first major phase of construction. 

Key improvements and changes effective December 15th: 

  • Southbound bus stops reopen (serving Routes 1, 26, 84, and 93) 
  • The west side elevator and stairs will be back in service 
  • A brand-new open-air stairway connecting Watt Avenue to the transit center will open 

Also, on December 15th, the east side elevator and stairs will close for construction. These changes will remain in effect through summer 2026. 

About the Project 
The Watt/I-80 Transit Center Improvement Project, which began in July 2024, is a comprehensive effort to modernize one of the region’s busiest transit hubs. Improvements include: 

  • Widening of the Watt Avenue Bridge 
  • New open-air stairwells 
  • Upgraded bus and pedestrian plazas 
  • Enhanced safety features and accessibility 
  • Improved on-ramp infrastructure 
  • New landscaping
